Our experts share their favorite free apps and sites for learning something new

RAPID changes in technology have revolutionized the way we take in information. Gone are the days of people buying guide books for Idiots and Dummies, and even Google is slowly losing its hold as the go-to site for searches.

Google’s latest data revealed that almost 40 percent of Gen Z prefer TikTok and Instagram when they need to do an online search. These sites are no longer just for entertainment; they are becoming platforms for learning. Their easy-to-digest and visually appealing content make them ideal options for people who need to learn on the fly.

We asked some of our learning experts in the Group—Fel Arabia (AC Infrastructure), Janica Magos (Generika), Ket Malabanan (Entrego), and John Yang (Ayala Corporation)—to share the free apps and sites they go to when they want to brush up on different topics.

Career growth

Ascend from Harvard Business Review provides content for young professionals who want to develop their soft skills for career growth. They have pages on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Simon Sinek’s short but compelling notes on leadership can give you the boost of motivation you need to overcome challenges. Check out his Instagram and TikTok accounts. The Mindset Mentor podcast with Rob Dial draws from neurobiology, psychology, and cognitive behavioral therapy to help you reframe your mindset and become the best version of yourself.

For Janica Magos, listening to podcasts is a go-to for learning new things.

Mental well-being

We are now more aware of the significant impact of mental well-being on our lives. Netflix’s Headspace series is a welcome break from the true crime shows and K-dramas that we usually binge on. The series offers short, visually assisted guides for meditation, unwinding, and sleeping better.

Fel Arabia turns to free apps like Headspace to help her unwind and relax.

Lavendaire’s YouTube channel has videos on positive affirmations, physical fitness, and journaling tips to help you lead a balanced life.

Office tools

We already know the basics of Microsoft Office tools, but if you want to unlock their full potential, tune in to the following TikTok and YouTube channels, which offer practical tips in easy-to-follow videos:

•Microsoft Office: Kevin Stratvert
•MS Excel: Sheet Sensei, miss.excel
•MS PowerPoint: hanifmislam

Event management

Whether it’s for a company-wide party or a small team-building session, Elevate Experiences can help you come up with ideas to make your events exciting and memorable.

Graphic design

If you need inspiration for a poster or presentation, Digital Synopsis on Facebook features the latest ideas on design and visual communication. Beginners can refer to their charts on color palettes and font combinations to give their design added flair.

Social etiquette

Our social skills may be rusty due to the lack of interaction over the past two years. As we go back to attending social events, it might be helpful to check out The Elegance Advisor’s practical reminders on dining and social etiquette.

In Ayala, we promote a culture of learning, and these new platforms help us live this culture by making it easy for us to sharpen our skills and expand our knowledge. Think about the pages and influencers you’re following now. If you’ve already tried a new recipe or DIY hack from TikTok, then that means you already learned something. Let’s continue to explore the different ways we can develop ourselves and build habits for life-long learning.

The AC Learning & Organization Development team designs training modules to make learning enjoyable for the group.
